Narrative:

This clip shown here shows that this girl is joining the school as the bottom of her face is shown in the car with her uniform showing. The first impression the audience may infer is that she is rich due to her father owning a Mercedes and having a custom number plate. The new character might impact the existing story line as maybe a threat to the main character for example she could be a competitor for a love interest.

Character:

The new character,Gabriella, comes across as the antagonist as she is shown as rebeliant  towards her parents and takes instructions literal. Gabriella already caused a disequilibrium in her first scene where she may have destroyed a relationship by kissing the boy and could cause Drama. The father of Gabriella is the father figure in this scene as he orders her around. The other Characters in this clip are minor characters or do not represent any character type.

Iconography:

The uniform being shown over here would indicate to the audience that the sub genre of this is a highschool drama, the use of incomplete uniform or flawed uniform shows the school is in trouble and students being rebellious and this not being an orderly school. This is also shown as a highschool drama as we can clearly see some books and pencil cases.

Setting:

The setting of the show is quickly introduced when the students are seen with there uniform on as that immediately lets the reader know that the show is based in a school. It also introduces this sterotype as there are many different group e.g goths, jocks and the cool kids. This allows the audience to easily identify that this is a school environment.

The trailer for James Bond- Spectre follows typical Hollywood action movie trailers narrative and techniques. By applying Todorov's theory of Equilibrium, it is clear that the equilibrium is James Bond in Mexico on a normal mission. The disequilibrium is clear when the seated man shouts "He's everywhere" at the 48th second of the trailer, the new equilibrium is not shown in the trailer this is critical to the movie trailer as it gives suspense to the target audience and gives a reason to watch the film. This is still critical although the typical action movie is where the Hero defeats the villain and the heroine is the prize for the hero, the audience would still have to watch the film for the resolution.

The trailer for Spectre uses many feature of Propp's character theory. James Bond, the main character, is a male hero who is very smart and strong, this is very stereotypical of Hollywood films as it is shown in many other action movies. Madeline, the main woman in Spectre, is used as a heroine which is the reward for the hero which again represents women as the bait and links to representation, this is also again stereotypical to Hollywood. The helper in this movie is Q who gives Bond information and gadgets in order to complete the mission, he also acts as the Donor. The antagonist in the movie could also like to my paragraph on representation where the villain is usually of a different ethnicity to the Hero and is usually part of a terrorist organisation.

The trailer for spectre is full with Barthes' Enigma and action codes. These are designed to draw the audience in and get them to watch the whole film for the resolution. The major enigma codes are when Bond enters the building where the Spectre meeting was held. There is alot of Action and enigma codes around the film, some of them are when Bond goes and hunt the Spectre organisation ad shoots his gun. This gives the audience the idea that this will be an action intense and packed movie!

Representation: Case study films.

Spectre: The hero, stereo-typically, is a male which is the case of most Hollywood or Western films of the characters being the strong, intelligent and morally well being. Females are represented as damsels, always needing to be rescued which again is stereotypical of Western based action films.

This cultivates an image overtime of women being weak and men being the saviours which is not the case in the true real world context. Britain and London is represented to be filled with first class and mostly white which some minority ethnicity civilians with good morals. Europeans are represented to be villainous and always inflicting pain and conflict. Social class is represented as the first class being split between immoral and good moralled people, usually the lower class is represented to be moral less this does reinforce British stereotype as usually the higher class British are sophisticated and have good morals for their country while lower class or foreigners are usually represented to be with bad morals and inflict conflict as I stated before. Elderly British civilians are represented to be Grand and are usually the CEO of big companies or organisations. e.g M of MI6 in Spectre. This somehow  challenges usual Hollywood stereotypes of Women being insignificant in action films.

Evaluating my production-work Assignment 2

1) I used action film posters to inspire me with my conventions of my poster and with the design, from what I have seen I concluded that many action posters include a central image with the main character and some sort of weapon in order to attract the desired target audience into interest with their film. I have clearly applied that trait into my film poster and applied a fake weapon into my hand via photoshop. I had decided to have a very masculine and testosterone boosted posture in order to seem like the typical hero of a hollywood action movie. The tag line was extremely well thought of as it is catchy and makes the audience question if authority can be trusted. When inserting the release date into the poster I decided to use military terminology in order to gain attention of the target audience who would most likely aspire or loved to be in a military/intelligence force. Finally, I included an age rating and made it 15 as most films in this genre is around 15 and gory violence is not included.

2) The genre of this film is Action/Crime/Thriller, the target audience would easily be able to distinguish this poster as associated with the genre. This is very identifiable as the typography associated with the genre very easily, the punchline , title and release date typography is associated with the urban thriller genre. The tag line gives hints of a military based movie with words such as "compromised". The colours used were a mix of dark and a few light colours to show an urban feel and also an intelligence based film.

3) I included reviews from two very respected magazines in the movie/film industry/business with punchy and short reviews with 5 star ratings, the production and institutional logo of paramount gives the target audience a sense of quality with this movie poster as paramount is one of the biggest production companies in the film industry this would attract an audience.

4) My storyboard and trailer have very similar characteristics with the main character being shown in a holy wood hero fashion, the typography in both posters and trailers are identical and punchlines from the poster is used throughout the storyboard which synergises them together.

5) I have represented a mixed ethnic minority as the main hero which contrasts against the stereotypical race of a Hollywood hero, white male. The villain is white male which again contrasts against the typical Hollywood hero which is usually of an ethnic minority, this would appeal to the target audience as this idea is refreshing. This also contrasts against the typical 007 or Mi6 Agent who is usually in a full tuxedo and a white male. The main characters are both male but this may negatively reinforce Women stereotypes that they should not be operating in high risk situations.

Film Trailer and poster analysis:

Film posters: key conventions
  • Central image: The central image shows a bullet with the spectre logo this is effective as it clearly shows a broken glass with a shot through it which would make the audience assume this is action.
  • 'Spectre' is shown ontop of the brand 007 which shows this is a Bond film and clearly makes a statement to attract attention to the audience.
  • There is no tagline since James Bond is such a big franchise.
  • Shoes the release date under the Brand name.

  • There is no critic views, the audience expect quality as a must for this Brand.

  • The iconography of the brand name on the posted "007" has the number structured as a gun with the end of a gun after the brand name, this clearly relates this to the action/thriller genre.
Film trailers: key conventions
  • The institution is shown torwards the start which is typical and crucial for a successful film trailer.
  • The opening clearly shows Bond in a hostile environment and sets the scene in a 3rd world country City.
  • Short clips are shown throughout showing typical James Bond love scenes , fight scene etc.
  • Very faced paced shots shown throughout the trailer creates a dramatic atmosphere and also fits the genre.

Transformers The Last Knight:

Trailer:

Genre: Sci-Fi + Action

Narrative: The story line shows an alien like invasion on Earth and the transformers protecting the Earth against the invaders. This story-line is tense and fast-paced which fits the action and sci-fi genre really well.

Character: The characters are unusual in a Hollywood sci-fi movie with the aliens protecting Earth against other aliens in contrast to the typical Humans VS Alien invader scenario of previous Sci-Fi apocalyptic movies. The aliens invading typical invasion with force creating an all out war and havoc throughout Earth. The main Human character is played by Mark Whalberg he is seen as the typical male hero in Hollywood: Big,Strong and filled with determination to protect his daughter and humanity from anything.

Iconography: Many explosions, aliens , technology and violence in this movie. This is the usual description for a Sci-Fi movie and the Transformers brand is iconic for implementing these into their movies and trailer therefore I am confident that this symbolises Action and Sci-Fi genre.

Setting: The trailer doesn't reveal much about the setting, but we can see from this short trailer the setting to be in a sort of desert which is symbolic of ancient sci-fi settings and adventure as well as space which also completely symbolises Sci-Fi and obviously adventure.

London Has Fallen:

Genre: Action Thriller

Narrative: All the main leaders of the world head to London for the funeral of the British Prime Minister, this is the typical story for disaster in Hollywood as it would seem as an easy chance for terrorists, typically of Islamic decent which is iconic for Hollywood extremist movies, to snatch and execute the President of the USA.

Character: This storyline presents the typical Characteristics of a spy/hero of a Hollywood main character ,ruthless and determined. Mike Banning is the main character in this movie as one of the head agents of the American Secret Service.

Iconography: Many explosions, car chases , gunfights and terrorists which is ideal and very typical of the american film industry to imprint into an action thriller movie. Includes extremely tense scenes and scenes of drama.

Setting: This movie is set in London which is very odd due to the standard issue police force having limited access to guins, RPGs etc. this also helps the story line as it helps Mike determine real police to extremists due to recognising police with non standard police pistols.

Fantastic Beasts and where to find them:

Genre: Fantasy,adventure.

Narrative: The main character is shown to be on a quest to infiltrate and captur the beasts of the world that reaks havoc in society, this would seem a challenge as they are creating havoc on humans in the non wizarding world.

Character: The main character is not the typical hero or supernatural hero in Hollywood, he does not possess immense strength or intelligence and skill set seems to bet limited/

Iconography: The iconography in this trailer all add up to the fantasy genre i.e colours are very flamboyant , fire , magic and supernatural characters are the ideal and iconic iconography for a fantasy movie.

Setting: The movie is set in America which is not usual for a fantasy type movie since witchcraft etc. originated in areas such as England or Norway (european).
